History

The National University of Malaysia was founded as a symbol of national identity, academic excellence, and intellectual empowerment. The idea of establishing a national university began in the early 20th century through the efforts of Malay scholars and leaders who envisioned a higher education institution that would promote knowledge, research, and the Malay language as a medium of instruction. After years of determination and national support, UKM was officially established on 18 May 1970 in Kuala Lumpur.

Over the decades, UKM has grown into one of Malaysia’s leading research universities, recognized globally for its achievements in education, innovation, and research excellence. As part of its international expansion, The National University of Malaysia – Qatar (UKM-Qatar) was established in 2023 in Lusail City, extending UKM’s academic legacy to the Middle East and supporting Qatar’s vision for knowledge-based development and global education.
